Clean up your act
Not in the moralising sense.
In the boardroom sense.
Because how we show up at the table matters more than we often admit.
Cleaning up our act in the boardroom is about becoming intentional:
- Intentional about how we listen
- Intentional about whose voices we make space for
- Intentional about the perspectives we privilege and those we dismiss too quickly
It’s about noticing our habits:
- Do we rush to speak before we’ve really heard?
- Do we defend positions rather than explore possibilities?
- Do we mistake confidence for competence or silence for agreement?
At its best, the boardroom is not a stage for performance.
It is a shared space for thinking, questioning, and collective judgement. Always in the best interests of the organisation.
A Shift in Awareness
A willingness to pause and ask:
- What hat am I wearing right now?
- What assumptions am I bringing into this discussion?
- What do I need to do differently to hold the space more effectively?
And yes, sometimes it means cleaning up our competencies:
- Deep listening
- Perspective-taking
- Emotional intelligence
- Constructive engagement
- Professional scepticism without personal defensiveness
So perhaps the real invitation is this:
Before the next meeting, ask yourself:
- What needs to shift in how I show up?
- What does cleaning up my act look like for me?
Because effective governance doesn’t start with better structures. It starts with more conscious directors.
What will you do differently at the boardroom table?
